August Waiver Trade Rules

Just because the July 31 trade deadline has passed doesn't mean teams can't still get deals done. It just gets a little more complicated, as players now have to pass through waivers first. In years passed a lot of deals didn't happen because teams could afford to take on the salary of the player and claim the player off waivers. Here we are in an economic financial crisis, and most teams are looking to cut salaries and so this will make it easier to pass players through waivers. I will explain some of the key bullet points on how this works.

Any player can be put on waivers by his team at any time during the season, and the player does not have to be informed.

Other teams have the opportunity to make a claim on the player during a 47 hour window.

If the player is claimed, the team that placed him on waivers has the option of pulling him back.

If the team pulls him back they can't trade him for 30 days.

If his team decides not to pull him back the GM has several choices in what to do next.
  1. The team can just simply dump the player and his salary on the team that claimed him, and get nothing in return.
  2. The team can work out a trade with the team that claimed him. However if there is a player involved in the trade who is on a 40 man roster, the player must go through waivers first.
  3. No one claims him, and his team is free to trade him to any team.
  4. If more than one team places a claim on a player, the winning claim is awarded based on worst record or the league the claiming team is in.
I hope this clarifies the common confusion surrounding the August trading rules. Questions?

do you think that there is any chance we can still pull off the san diego trade following these waiver rules. I mean what team wouldnt want to jump in and snag A-Gonz

Impossible? No. However highly unlikely knowing there is almost zero chance Adrian Gonzalez or Heath Bell will make it through waivers. Stay tuned I will be posting possible August targets for the Dodgers that will clear waivers tomorrow.

thats too bad with him in the lineup it give man ram protection and bell in the bullpen gives us the best bullpen in baseball. I wish Ned would pull the trigger on one of these moves before we all here what could have been.

I gotta agree with you letting names like Loney and Martin are hard to do. But if it had been me I would have pulled the trigger. Not sure how that deal fell apart. However that deal would have made us NLCS Champs no doubt. It also would have given us a real shot at winning the whole thing. I have to believe this deal not happening was strictly San Diego not wanting to deal Bell and Gonzalez. It would have caused a huge uproar in San Diego. You don't want to stir the pot too much, especially after dealing Peavy away.

I read on mlbtraderumors.com that the dodgers backed off right before the deadline. Hey Just curious about the possible targets you mention do you get your info from somebody or is it just speculation. I really dont care im just curious. Thanks.

All my information has a source with a link, and commonly from Ken Gurnick from mlb.com or Ken Rosenthal from FoxSports. Espn writers Jayson Stark and Jon Heyman are a couple more favorites of mine. I am starting to get into this twitter thing, and trying to find sources there as well. I do sometimes speculate on possible moves or ideas, however I will always put that I am speculating when I do that on the rare occasion.
