Dodgers Considering John Smoltz For 2010

Dylan Hernandez confirms the Dodgers interest in John Smoltz, per his agent Keith Grunewald.

Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of Fox Sports say there are several teams interested in John Smoltz. The free agent righty is apparently open to starting or relieving next season. Smoltz had a terrible start with Boston in 2009, and was eventually released. The 42-year-old Smoltz ended up signing with St. Louis where he put up a 4.26 ERA in seven starts. The future hall of famer will have plenty of suitors, but are the Dodgers the right fit?

Why not Smoltz! Currently what do the Dodgers have as a number 5 starter? The bullpen is solid at the 8th and 9th inning spots. McDonald should also be considered for the rotation. The Dodgers must do something, I never thought I would say this, but the rotation is the Dodgers weakest link in 2010 and the rest of the division will be better!

I'll tella ya why not Smoltz, because they don't need a number 5 guy they need a number 1 guy. They had a rotation full of 2-3-4-5 guys last year, but no number 1. They need to bite the bullet and bring Halladay to LA. With Halladay, Kuroda, Kershaw, and Billingsley they've got a solid four. I feel if they got a number 1 guy it would take the pressure of Chad & Clayton. You could then have McDonald try for the 5th spot or resign Padilla for number 5. Just my thoughts.

I agree that a number 1 pitcher would be ideal. But it is far from probable. Biting the bullet and getting halladay would require either Chad Billingsley and a few above average prosepects or Russell Martin and our top 3-4 prospects. With Halladay we get one year to win a world series and if we dont, then what? weve mortgaged our future for a runner-up finish at best. I think it is best to let Kersh and Billz develop and fill out the rotation as needed. Our rotation is still better than the rest of the division. Lincecum and Haren are better than Kershaw right now, but Billingsley is the best number 2 minus(minus 2 months last year) and Kuroda is the best number 3 in the division.

by 2011, Kershaw should be in the Lincecum class and Billz has already showed the ability to pitch like a minor ace. OVERALL our rotation is stronger, assuming we fill it out with guys like Padilla or Wolf or Smoltz or Bedard or Sheets.

I agree that Halladay will cost us A LOT of talent, including either Billingsley and most likely, Kershaw. Not worth it considering Halladay will hit free agency after next season. Toronto will ask for too much fo Halladay. Lets just get a solid starter (Smoltz, Wolf, etc) and we'll be ok. Hopefully Billingsley and Kershaw continue to improve. Then, when Manny's contract expires at the end of next season, we can get Halladay in free agency without having to trade our prospects.
