Dodgers Focusing On Trading For Roy Halladay

Bob Nightengale says via Twitter the Los Angeles Dodgers "badly need an ace." The Dodgers have apparently set their sights on trading for Toronto Blue Jays' pitching ace Roy Halladay. The deal would likely cost Chad Billingsley and others.

MLB.com mentioned recently that the Blue Jays may allow another team a window to negotiate a contract extension with Roy Halladay should a trade be consummated. This does not add value in any way to Halladay's value, in fact it is being reported Halladay's value has gone done since last July. It does mean a trade is likely, but not inevitable. If the Dodgers are able to pull off a trade for "Doc" it will start with costing them Chad Billingsley. I recently suggested trading Billingsley would be a huge mistake, and my opinion on that hasn't changed. Keep in mind what Billingsley has done so far at a very young age, his enormous potential, and the millions of dollars between his and Halladay's salaries.

It seems as though Colletti may be going all in for Halladay. Especially after missing out on Cliff Lee in July, and then being bounced out of the NLCS for the second year in a row. It may be time for a change, and perhaps a trade makes sense at this point. But it always seems the Dodgers are always too quick to give up on young talent, and they make us pay for it. Look at Edwin Jackson, Jayson Werth, Cody Ross, and that is just a few from the recent years. Toronto's new GM Alex Anthopoulos is looking to make a splash, and robbing the Dodgers is exactly what he has in mind. This is of course pure speculation but you could start with a package of Chad Billingsley, Russell Martin, Devaris Gordon, and Andrew Lambo. Depending on how the negotiations go Martin could be subbed for Lucas May or A.J. Ellis, and Devaris Gordon for Ivan DeJesus. It's also possible the Dodgers would have to include one or both of Chris Withrow or Ethan Martin.  Sure the idea of Halladay sounds great, but be careful what you wish for...

Obtaining Halladay does not guarantee the Dodgers a World Series appearance, much less a championship. Then what? There are no guarantees, and this begs the question. At what point does a trade no longer make sense? What price is too much? What package of players do you think would get a deal done?

I am still on the fence about Halladay for Billingsley. I love Billz and have watched him grow through the minors and at the big league level. While he has Ace potential no doubt, I worry about his makeup. He has similar stuff quality-wise to Halladay and costs alot less and is under control for 2 more years. I hate to give up on young players but sometimes it is nice to just have that bonafide ace to pitch every 5 days. A package of Billingsley, Lambo, Withrow, Dejesus would probably get it done. Under no circumstances would I trade Gordon or E. Martin. If the Jays ask for more then forget it.

I suggest going after younger, cheaper aces ala Greinke and Felix. I would much rather give up a boatload of talent for them than for 1 yr. of Halladay and his age...Great pitcher but I think the others fit better in the scheme of things.

Gordon, E. Martin, Linblom, Elbert, Lambo for Halladay IF he signs a 4 year extension. Hang on to Billingsley. The Jays must realize they will not win within the next 2-3 seasons so Billingsley would be wasteful. Better for them to get guys who will take a season or two in the minors and then have 6 seasons in Jay uniforms.

Anonymous....you suggest trading 3 Top of the Rotation starting pitchers plus our future SS and RF for 4 years of Halladay which would cost somewhere around 80-100 million? That would deplete our farm system and cripple our payroll for years. Juan.....Greinke wont get traded...Felix would require Billingley and Ethier plus 1-2 prospects or our top 7 prospects at least. Not worth it in my opinion

Dang!!! Why would we trade Bills, Martin, Lambo, Dejesus, AND E. Martin for Halladay!!?? That would be overpaying by 1000000%!!! I say Billinsley, Ellis, and prospects gets the job done. Remember, this is probably a package that would be needed last July, not in the offseason. Giving up that much talent for 1 year of Doc is a complete and utter waste, in my opinion.

Your right the Dodgers need an ace, but the “cost” to acquire Halladay is too steep in both what we have to give up and his annual salary. Billingsley and Martin will bounce back and there is a lot more talent out there for the starting rotation. The Dodgers already have a 1-2 punch in Billingsley and Kershaw, they need to resign Wolf, look into Smoltz or Martinez as a number 5, and also try to get back Jackson. Don’t discount the trade value of Pierre either! As much as I would like to keep Pierre in Dodger-Blue, he is not getting used like he should. If he continues to be a part time player, his value will decrease quickly, so let’s package him and see what happens, but keep tomorrow’s talent – we are going to need them soon enough!

Trade sherill and dewitt for jackson......we need
Starting pitching and the tigers need a closer
And a second baseman......and go out and
Sign sheets or bedard

1.Jackson
2.Billz
3.Kershaw
4.Sheets or Bedard
5.Kuroda

True...I heard that the Tigers wanted young, cheap pitching prospects in exchange for Jackson...Sherrill wont be cheap anymore and Dewitt would likely be a reserve in the AL unless he develops beyond what is expected. I like Jackson but i think it would take a different package. I would definitely like to sign Sheets and/or Bedard. Rotation of Kershaw, Sheets, Bedard, Billz, Kuroda would be great. Sub Jackson for Bedard/Sheets since Kuroda wont be going anywhere and it would still be unbelievable.

Look, the point of trading prosepcts for an ace is the potential the prospects have. There is no guarentee that ANY of those prospects will become worth an ace like Halladay. Then again 3 or 4 of them could turn into stars. It's a risk but why wait 2-3 seasons for Martin, Gordon, Lambo to MAYBE turn into studs? By then Ethier, Kemp, Bills, Kershaw, etc will be free agents. It'll be hard enough to hold onto the guys we have let alone adding! The Dodgers should be signing free agents and spending 120+ million right now. But they won't.

Halladay, Kershaw, Wolf, Billingsley, Kuroda!!! The juice is worth the squeeze to hava a rotation like that. Ya its nice having guys in the minors that could help eventually but I'm tired of the Dodgers passing on the best players because of potential and money. Let's WIN! The Dodgers have a strong farm system, despite what BaseballAmerica says. Hu could be a steady major leauge SS. Dewitt could (sorry Shaun) be a very good player. Russell, Lambo, DeJesus, Gordon, Elbert, Linblom, Withrow, Martin, May, Delmonico, A. Miller, Baez, etc. Use this and get some kick as players! Trade some for Uggla and Johnson (contract talks have stopped so its more likely they'll trade him). Or get Halladay. Do something!

Bills needs to slow down and go right down that mound he tends to pull to the left every single time hence why he works so hard per inning.

Go Bums

I literally laughed outloud when it was suggested we trade dee gordon and andrew lambo. gordon is arguably our top prospect though still 2 years away, mostly cause of furcal's contract; but I expect lambo to be starting in LF in 2011. I wouldn't mind trading Martin but the jays probably want someone cheaper, like Lucas May, do NOT trade tony delmonico (remember Carlos Santana?). I would pull the trigger on a deal that sent the Jays Lucas May, Ivan DeJesus Jr, Scott Elbert and Josh Lindblom

i think delmoico, dejesus, lindblom, elbert and allen wabster would do it and throw in kyle russell cause jays do need that power bat!!!

Jackson isn't half as good as Kershaw or Bills. And he really struggled in the second half. I need to see more consistency out of him before he's anything more than a number 3.

I would trade Sherrill for Jackson though, just because the reward is so much higher than the risk, but then again, Jackson should be expensive pretty soon. I'd rather not have Jackson or Sherrill.

Pitching is THE organizational strength.
