Update 7:56pm: Just to clarify the Dodgers did not make any last minute deals today. I imagine Ned Colletti is going to get some sleep tonight. Tomorrow is a new day however and my gut says the Dodgers will make a deal in the next week or so. Colletti will now have to follow the August waiver rules however to get any deal done.
Update 5:32pm: Jon Heyman has an update that a blockbuster almost went through at the end today. The deal would have from the Padres Heath Bell and Adrian Gonzalez to the Dodgers for James Loney, Russell Martin, Blake DeWitt, James McDonald and Ivan Dejesus. I am shocked by the mere thought of this deal being publicized. This one is a tough call for me, but my first instinct is deal. What do you guys think deal or no deal?
Update 3:07pm:ESPN News is reporting Heath Bell was traded to the Dodgers. Unofficial. Deal did not go through per Jon Heyman see above.
Update 2:27pm: Early reports are saying neither the Dodgers or Angels were able to get a deal done before the deadline.
Update 1:50pm: No news out of Dodgertown yet. Be patient and keep your shorts on as it can take several hours for the deals made towards the end to be formally announced. Remember last year that the Manny deal wasn't announced until almost 3 hours past the 4pm est deadline. I will have all the Dodgers rumors and news covered live for the remainder of the day.
Update 1:36pm: BREAKING NEWS It's official Jake Peavy has been traded to the Chicago White Sox. SI's Jon Heyman broke the story. I will be so glad to not have him in the NL West.
Update 1:21pm: The 2009 Trade Deadline has passed. No word yet of any other deals however it's common for deals to be announced after the 4:00pm est deadline. I will keep you posted. It's looking like Gonzalez, Bell, and Halladay are staying put.
Update 12:30pm: Tick Tock goes the clock, 30 minutes 'til the deadline arrives.
Update 12:01pm: Oh it just keeps getting better and better as we near the deadline hour. Rumors are pouring in that the Dodgers are now after Adrian Gonzalez and Heath Bell, trying to get at least one possibly both in a blockbuster deal. They are said to be in "serious discussions" on a potential deal. Ken Rosenthal has the official update here. James Loney is positively included in any deal for Gonzalez. This is so exciting isn't it?
Update 11:26am: Hold your breath Dodger fans, according to Bill Shaikin of the Times Heath Bell is on the Dodgers radar. He is calling it a battle between the Angels and Dodgers. What would a bullpen look like with Sherrill, Bell, and Broxton in it? It's easy the best 'pen in the majors period.
Update 9:30am: Fox Sports Rosenthal and Morosi are saying the Dodgers are unlikely to reach a deal with the Blue Jays for Jason Frasor. The Dodgers quest continues in their search for bullpen help, and an addition to the rotation. They go on to say that the Pirates are listening to offers on Paul Maholm, Zach Duke, and Matt Capps. Duke and Capps would be perfect fits for the Dodgers, and the two teams have a good history in deadline deals.
Seattle ESPN Radio's Mike Salk is saying Jarrod Washburn has been traded to the Detroit Tigers. The deal is official, and has been confirmed by Morosi with Fox Sports. Washburn is off the market for the Dodgers. Not sure how much interest Colletti had in Washburn anyway.
August Waiver Trade Rules
Just because the July 31 trade deadline has passed doesn't mean teams can't still get deals done. It just gets a little more complicated, as players now have to pass through waivers first. In years passed a lot of deals didn't happen because teams could afford to take on the salary of the player and claim the player off waivers. Here we are in an economic financial crisis, and most teams are looking to cut salaries and so this will make it easier to pass players through waivers. I will explain some of the key bullet points on how this works.
Any player can be put on waivers by his team at any time during the season, and the player does not have to be informed.
Other teams have the opportunity to make a claim on the player during a 47 hour window.
If the player is claimed, the team that placed him on waivers has the option of pulling him back.
If the team pulls him back they can't trade him for 30 days.
If his team decides not to pull him back the GM has several choices in what to do next.

- The team can just simply dump the player and his salary on the team that claimed him, and get nothing in return.
- The team can work out a trade with the team that claimed him. However if there is a player involved in the trade who is on a 40 man roster, the player must go through waivers first.
- No one claims him, and his team is free to trade him to any team.
- If more than one team places a claim on a player, the winning claim is awarded based on worst record or the league the claiming team is in.
Matt Kemp Is The Real Deal
Matt Kemp is arguably the best center-fielder in baseball right now. Last year Kemp found himself in multiple trade rumors as the Dodgers approached this day last year. Matt Kemp had been struggling with breaking balls and his very questionable plate discipline. He had a tendency to take poor routes on fly balls, and made unexplainable judgment calls on the basepaths.
This year is quite the opposite as he was nearly picked for All-Star Game in St. Louis. However he fell just short despite being the obvious choice. Kemp has posted All-Star numbers all season, batting .320 with 55 RBI's, and 13 homers. He continues to use his feet as he has 20 steals and 6 triples. If he continues on this pace, Kemp could finish the season with an average above .300 with 30 homers, 40 steals, and 100 RBI's. Kemp may find himself in the running for the NL MVP award if he can perform on this level consistently. Hard to argue these statements posting numbers like that.
Kemp is clearly the Dodgers first half MVP, and is consistently proving himself on the major league level. This guy is the real deal, and he is clearly becoming the player everyone knew he would be. I am making a case for Matt Kemp as the most underated player in the MLB.

Dodgers Rumors: Roy Halladay Not Traded
Update 1:30pm: Joel Sherman says Roy Halladay has not been traded. What a complete waste.
Update 7/31 8:29am Joel Sherman of the NY Post is one of the many saying Halladay will not be traded and Jays management has decided to work on contending in 2010 instead. Time will tell as the deadline is less than 6 hours away. Ricciardi expects to hold on to all his players and stay pat.
Update 7:56pm Toronto GM J.P. Ricciardi is "not saying definitively" that Halladay will remain a Blue Jay, according to ESPN.com's Jayson Stark. However, the GM says it's looking Halladay will remain with the Jays. How many times has he said this? I say he is bluffing and trying to hold his ground and keep the high asking price in place.
Update 4:53pm Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi deny the report below from the L.A. Times and called the report "not accurate."
Update 4:35pm Ed Price tweets on some more Halladay chatter. He says "To clarify, J.P. Ricciardi was saying the Blue Jays are open to deal, won't close door on trading Halladay until 4 p.m. tomorrow." I will says this if Ricciardi thinks he can play hardball with the BoSox, Rangers, and Dodgers he has another thing coming.
Update 4:28pm Bill Shaikin of the L.A. Times reports that the Dodgers and Blue Jays spent the afternoon "negotiating extensively" over Roy Halladay. I am calling Ricciardi's bluff right now, this guy is saying one thing and doing the complete opposite. Will Halladay be pitching for the Dodgers this Sunday?
First let's recap what's gone on so far in the Dodgers Roy Halladay rumors. This will be the final Roy Halladay thread, as I will keep the remaining Halladay rumors all right here.

- The Blue Jays are no longer requiring Billingsley or Kershaw in a deal. The current price is somewhere around four to six top prospects.
- The Dodgers have enough left in the minors to get a deal done for Halladay.
- Jason McDonald is the only player offered off the major league roster.
- Lot's of contradicting reports that Halladay is staying and going.
- The Dodgers have remained front-runners for Halladay after missing out on Cliff Lee.
- The Phillies, Angels, Tigers, Rays, Rangers are all reportedly out. The Red Sox and Dodgers remain in the race but have failed to "wow" Ricciardi.
Dodgers Acquire Vinny Rottino For Claudio Vargas
Update 12:16pm Ken Gurnick from MLB.com has an update on Rottino for us. "Rottino, 29, has appeared briefly in the Major Leagues for Milwaukee in each of the past three seasons and was named to the Pacific Coast League All-Star team last season when he posted a 24-game hitting streak. He was hitting .249 with four homers and 48 RBIs for Double-A Huntsville this season."
The Dodgers reached a deal for catcher Vinny Rottino this morning according to ESPN's Amy Nelson. They sent pitcher Claudio Vargas to the Milwaukee Brewers in the straight up deal.
Not a whole lot of information on the 29 year old Rottino, so I will see what I can dig up.
This move is purely to make a roster spot for the George Sherrill trade. Vargas was not getting any real opportunity. He pitched for the Brewers in 2007, and should be a decent innings eater in the 'pen for the Brew Crew.

Dodgers Recall Elbert, Close To Making Deal?
Update 7/30 4:49pm Ken Gurnick updates us on the Scott Elbert chatter last night. "While negotiations on the George Sherrill were ongoing Thursday, the Dodgers recalled left-handed reliever Scott Elbert and optioned back to Triple-A Albuquerque left-handed reliever Brent Leach. Elbert had been scratched from a scheduled start Wednesday night. Elbert, who has been mentioned in trade rumors, had been optioned to Albuquerque 10 days earlier." However Elbert is guaranteed to be involved in any deal that brings Roy Halladay to Los Angeles.
Ken Gurnick from MLB.com is reporting that Dodgers pitching prospect Scott Elbert was scratched from his scheduled start in Albuquerque tonight. Since he was just sent back down on July 22nd, there is no way he can be recalled until he spends ten days in the minors, which would be Saturday. I am not aware of any injuries so it is likely a deal is close. Elbert had been mentioned in numerous trade rumors, particularly in a deal that would net George Sherrill from the Baltimore Orioles.
Ed Price is tweeting that Sherrill isn't going anywhere. However I think Sherrill makes the most sense if Elbert is involved. Colletti is denying reports of a trade being close in multiple reports. This backs up the fact that a deal is likely close, and not actually reached. Could this be a blockbuster for Halladay? Is Toronto GM Ricciardi getting trigger happy?

Dodgers Still Seeking Relievers
Even after acquiring George Sherrill earlier today. The Los Angeles Dodgers are still searching for additional relievers. Jayson Stark has the latest on the Dodgers seeking a right handed setup man. Teams in conversation with the Dodgers say they have interest in David Weathers, Matt Capps, Arthur Rhodes and Jason Frasor. No links to any Heath Bell, or Chad Qualls rumors.
Official: George Sherrill Traded To Dodgers
Update 1:19pm Ed Price confirms as does Ken Rosenthal.
Update 12:52pm Ken Gurnick from MLB.com is saying it's a done deal. George Sherrill to the Dodgers for Josh Bell and Steve Johnson.
Update 12:44pm Yahoo's Gordon Edes says the Orioles are "on the verge" of trading George Sherrill to the Dodgers for Josh Bell, and Scott Elbert. Elbert was a late scratch and pulled from his start last night. Sherrill is a perfect fit and becomes Broxtons setup man. Those are two great prospects for the rebuilding Orioles. The Dodgers have remain focused on Sherrill. He is 32, and under team control through 2011. He has a 2.40 ERA with 20 saves in 41.3 innings this year.
Ed Price from AOL Fanhouse tweets that George Sherrill to Dodgers is a done deal. I will get you details as soon as I get them. There is no confirmation yet, however the Dodgers have been the favorites for a solid two weeks. Stay tuned, details coming shortly.

Dodgers Bring Sherrill In, Frontrunners For Halladay?
Update 2:40pm: The Phillies, Angels, Tigers, Rays, Rangers are all reportedly out. The Red Sox and Dodgers remain in the race but have failed to "wow" Ricciardi. The Dodgers have likely moved on after acquiring Sherrill earlier today.
Update 2:33pm: Jack Curry of the New York Times has the latest comments from Ricciardi.
"We've got nothing going on. We expect him to be with us."
Update 11:50am: Yahoo's Tim Brown is saying it's a two team race between the BoSox and Dodgers for Halladay. Dodgers still seem to be the frontrunners, and the this will likely get done sooner rather than later. Brown also says that Jason McDonald is the only offered player from the major league roster.
Update 11:41am: Espn's Jayson Stark says Devaris Gordon is off limits. He better be as he is the heir to replace Rafael Furcal. Gordon should be held on to at all costs.
Update 11:26am: Ken Rosenthal has a source that is now saying things are "very quiet" on Halladay chatter. A source points out that it might take Josh Bell, Devaris Gordon, Josh Lindblom, Ethan Martin and Nathan Eovaldi. This is some kind of joke right?
Joe McDonald of the Providence Journal sees the Dodgers in the lead for Roy Halladay, this is contradicting various reports last night and early this morning.
Ken Rosenthal says the Los Angeles Dodgers are pursuing both George Sherrill and Roy Halladay. It will be challenging to land both as the O's and Jays want the same prospects. He also notes that the Jays are no longer requiring Chad Billingsley or Clayton Kershaw to be included. While the Orioles are believed to prefer Josh Bell over Blake DeWitt.

Dodgers Likely To Pass On Halladay
Dodgers GM Ned Colletti doesn't seem inclined to sell the farm for Roy Halladay. Toronto GM J.P. Ricciardi is asking for five or six top prospects in any deal with the Dodgers. Chad Billingsley and Clayton Kershaw are no longer required in any deal. SI's Jon Heyman says the price is "too high" for Halladay.
He later notes that the Dodgers are still focusing on George Sherrill. No other big names are being linked to the Dodgers currently. Today should be a busy day in Dodgertown, and this may be the quiet before the storm.

Vin Scully Ready to Retire After 2010 Season
Vin Scully one of the most decorated and well known broadcasters in the history of professional sports has announced his tentative retirement. LA Times Bill Plaschke has the story in an interview with the legendary Scully.
Scully was quoted saying "God willing, I will probably come back for one more year."At this moment, my health is excellent, and I'm leaning toward one more year."
And then retire?
"Yes, that makes sense," he said.
This is obviously somewhat expected, as we knew the day would come when his voice would no longer be heard during a Dodgers broadcast. This will be a sad day for all, and also a time to celebrate his legendary voice. It will never be the same without good ol' Vin calling the game, let's give Vin one more World Series so we can all hear him say the Los Angeles Dodgers are World Series Champions.

Dodgers Remain Focused on Sherrill
Dodgers GM Ned Colletti remains focused on acquiring Orioles closer George Sherrill. Ken Rosenthal has the latest update. After missing out on Indians ace Cliff Lee earlier today, the Dodgers have once again shifted focus on Sherrill. The Dodgers are believed to be "actively engaged" and are the front runners to acquire Sherrill. Rosenthal also notes that "The Dodgers have maintained interest in Sherrill, and a number of their prospects appeal to the Orioles."
I called this one earlier today, I would expect Sherrill to be in the Dodgers 'pen this weekend. He would be the perfect setup man for Broxton and his sore toe. Sherrill would be the super spot closer on days where Broxton needs rest.

Dodgers Miss Out on Cliff Lee
Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports is reporting that the Philadelphia Phillies and Cleveland Indians have agreed to a deal that sends Cliff Lee and Ben Francisco to the Phillies for Jason Knapp, Carlos Carrasco, Jason Donald and Lou Marson. The deal includes no cash and is not yet official. The teams still have to examine medical records for the deal to go through. Nice move for the reigning champs.
The Dodgers need to move to plan b, and it likely will not be Roy Halladay. Unless he falls in the Dodgers lap, Halladay will likely remain in Toronto now. I am predicting a deal to be made soon for Sherrill. I would hope talks for Washburn are reopened soon if not already. How about Washburn and Morrow? Would a package of Juan Pierre, Josh Bell, Andrew Lambo, and Chris Withrow along with cash be enough?

Los Angeles Dodgers Looking To Deal
The Dodgers need a starter if they are going to continue being the best team in baseball. Jason McDonald didn't work out, Eric Milton is done for the year, and Jason Schmidt, well we all had high hopes. Eric Stults filled in nicely while he was in the rotation. He is sure to get a call as soon as soon as the Dodgers are done experimenting with Jason Schmidt.
Jon Heyman from SI had this to say about the Dodgers today. "The Dodgers are more focused on Lee than Halladay, as they probably sense their chances are close to zero for Halladay. Lee provides a cheaper alternative in terms of both prospects and money. The Dodgers and Indians made a big deal last year when L.A. sent top catching prospect Carlos Santana to the Indians for third baseman Casey Blake, so they have it in them."
I will admit Heyman got it right here. I think the price for Halladay is dangerous and GM's should be very careful and not get too trigger happy. I think Cliff Lee fits the Dodgers much better anyhow. Colletti needs to zero in on GM Mark Shapiro and get a deal done.
Heyman goes on to say later in the post that pitching prospects James McDonald, Scott Elbert and Chris Withrow would have to be in play. The Dodgers don't want to trade off their major league roster (can't blame 'em for that), but are their prospects enough?"
I like those names for a guy that pitches at the front of the rotation. We are ready to win now, and despite what the standings show the Dodgers need to stay the course. We can't break up the starting roster in any deal. If our prospects aren't enough to get a deal done, Colletti needs to say no deal. The other options is to move on to a guy like Jarrod Washburn who the Dodgers have been interested in for weeks. The Reds have Bronson Arroyo, Aaron Harang, plus some bullpen help as well. The facts are this, there are plenty of quality pitching options on the trade market even after Halladay and Lee.

Billingsley Linked To Roy Halladay
Yahoo's Gordon Edes offers some updates on the latest Roy Halladay rumors. He mentions that Clayton Kershaw remains untouchable, despite his name popping up daily. He also goes on to mention that the Dodgers have had internal discussions about the possibility of moving Chad Billingsley. Billingsley is by far the biggest name mentioned in the trade rumors for Halladay. Call me crazy but if Ned Colletti makes a deal involving Chad Billingsley, I will never forgive him. Edes did say that it was purely internal discussions. Here is my take on this, one of two things is going on here. The first is the report of Billingsley being traded is purely absurd, false, and ridiculous, so with all that we can all sleep well knowing Bills isn't going anywhere. The other is this is some type of ploy to drive up the price even more for Halladay, if you can believe that. Either way rest assured unless Colletti wants to hang himself he won't deal Billingsley. Kershaw is a stretch just him alone, let's hope Collettti doesn't screw this up. This thing makes no sense under any circumstances. We are the best team in baseball, someone explain why we need to trade Billingsley or Kershaw for Halladay. What exactly is that accomplishing?
With Halladay's probability of being traded decreasing by the hour, it seems the rumors are still picking up some momentum. Halladay made it very clear if he were to be traded, the deal would have to get done today. With no deal apparently close it seems Halladay may be staying put.

Around The Bases
Dodgers pitcher Jason Schmidt has once again proved to have nothing left in the tank. The Marlins knocked around Schmidt and it may be time for Schmidt to call it quits. I was really pulling for him to make a comeback, it seems to be quite clear his career is over. This will likely push the trade for Halladay, Lee, Arroyo, Harang, or whoever to happen. I would say this start by Schmidt made the likely hood of a trade very probable.
Hong-Chih Kuo was activated from the disabled list today. If he can be stay healthy he will make a huge impact in the second half of the season.
Andre Ethier was voted NL Player of the Week for the second time this season. He led almost every single offensive category in the majors. Ethier's power has come alive this season with 2o homeruns. That number ties his 2008 numbers, and puts him on pace for 34 homeruns. His power has been a nice presence all season, especially with his .270 average.

Dodgers Closing In On George Sherrill?
The Los Angeles Dodgers could be close to acquiring Orioles closer, George Sherrill. Ed Price tweets that the Dodgers "are hard in on" Sherrill. From the looks of things the Dodgers are very serious about acquiring the Baltimore closer. The Dodgers have been linked to Sherrill for several weeks and they may be close to pulling the trigger. This move would solidify the bullpen and add some depth incase of injuries.
The Orioles have said to be closely watching Scott Elbert. The left-hander has had a high ceiling, but had some injuries that have prevented him from being a big leaguer.

Dodgers and Indians Discussing Blockbuster
Ken Rosenthal also had another update on the Dodgers this morning. Rosenthal says that the Indians and Dodgers are currently in "serious discussions" about a trade that would send Cliff Lee and Victor Martinez to the Dodgers for a package including either Clayton Kershaw or Chad Billingsley and James Loney. This would be classified as a bonafide blockbuster if a deal is reached. I don't see Billingsley moved in this deal, but Kershaw is definitely a possibility with the aforementioned names. The Dodgers have seemed to shifted focus to the Indians in hopes of getting a deal done. I will keep you updated.
2009 Trade Deadline Update
Over the weekend not a whole lot happened as far as rumors are concerned. However there was some random chatter over the weekend worth mentioning so let's get caught up.
Tomorrow is the Roy Halladay trade deadline, and Ken Rosenthal along with others are saying Halladay will likely stay put. The Dodgers remain interested but the price seems too steep and have turned their attention elsewhere.
With no real progress made on acquiring Halladay. The Dodgers have shifted their focus to Cliff Lee. They are said to be in discussions with GM Mark Shapiro, I will keep you posted.
There were also a quite rumor of a Juan Pierre for Arthur Rhodes trade. This rumor has said to have no truth to it whatsoever. John Fay of the Cincinnati Inquirer has the latest buzz on this rumor. This one just doesn't make any sense for either team, however Pierre being traded remains a high possibility in the next several days.

Dodgers Favorites to Land Roy Halladay?
Update: July 24 1:03pm Ken Gurnick updates us on some comments that GM Ned Colletti made this morning on KABC Radio. Colletti says the Jays want "two or three players off our current club, including a young pitcher, or five or six prospects." Colletti didn't mention names, but presumably the young pitcher is either Clayton Kershaw or Chad Billingsley or Jonathan Broxton. I've said it again and I will say this over and over again. Colletti will not trade anyone from our starting roster. This would not accomplish anything and would create more holes than it would fill. Five or six prospects? I would need to see some names to make a more educated analysis. However I will take a stab at this and this is purely speculative. Josh Bell, Andrew Lambo, Josh Lindblom, Ethan Martin, Devaris Gordon, and another pitcher is likely the price tag we are looking at. Tough call on this one however if it brings us Doc and a guy like Jason Frasor, my first instinct is to pull the trigger Ned.
With the deadline set by Roy Halladay of July 28th winding down, the Los Angeles Dodgers are the quiet favorite to land the prized pitcher. The LA Times updates on the latest straight from the source, Los Angeles Dodgers GM Ned Colletti knows which of his players the Jays have interest in. The Dodgers have watched Halladay's last two starts, but reinforced his plans of not including Clayton Kershaw in any deal. No official word on any players named yet except for Josh Bell. Stay tuned as we head into a very busy rumor weekend.

Around The Bases and More
Jason Schmidt is scheduled to start again Sunday after his first win in over two years Tuesday night. The win on Tuesday wasn't pretty as Schmidt struggled badly in the first inning. The bats came through and was able to pick up the win. His start on Sunday will have a major factor on the moves that Ned Colletti makes the last few days of July.
Manny's x-rays came back negative and he is listed day to day. He took a 95 mph heater on the hand last night, and left the game early with a sore bruised hand. It looked a lot worse than it ended up being.
The injury to Manny must not be bothering him too much. Manny was held out of the sold out game against the Reds on Manny Bobblehead Night. Manny entered the game in the sixth inning as a pinch hitter with the bases loaded. He took the very first pitch deep into Mannywood for his 21st career grand slam. He now trails all time grand slam leader Lou Gehrig by two. Chad Billingsley was finally able to get his tenth win of the season. The Dodgers are now up 8.5 games over the Colorado Rockies in the NL West.
Ken Rosenthal adds a rumor update to round up today's around the bases. He says "The Phillies, Rays, Brewers and Dodgers are on still in on Indians ace Cliff Lee, and the Rangers have expressed continued interest" as well. I wonder who will have the higher price tag Cliff Lee or Roy Halladay?

Dodgers Still in on Halladay
Peter Gammons had an update on the latest rumors linking the Dodgers and Toronto ace Roy Halladay. Some highlights in the article, Dodgers are still in the mix for Halladay. Pros for the Dodgers are a number of Single-A and Double-A prospects. The Dodgers also are one of the few teams that have the flexibility to take on Halladay's contract. Cons are a lack of near-ready pitching prospects, and absence of Toronto scouts at Dodger games. No real names being thrown out in any of these rumors lately. Toronto has been said to like Josh Bell recently. Kershaw, Martin, and Ethier have all been named as possible centerpieces of a blockbuster deal. There is no validity or truth to these rumors. The deadline has been set for a deal to happen by July 28, stay tuned in to the latest on Roy Halladay right here at DodgersRumors.

Jason Schmidt Is Finally Back
Jason Schmidt will be on the mound tonight against the Cincinnati Reds. Yes, you read that correctly. Jason Schmidt is back in the majors, and in the Dodgers starting rotation. Jason Schmidt takes over the fifth spot in the Dodgers starting rotation after losing Eric Milton for the year. It will be Schmidt's first Major League outing since June 16, 2007. Two shoulder surgeries and two years of rehab later, Schmidt returns to the mound as the Dodgers need a fifth starter. He was doing very well in the minors before being called up.
There will be plenty of thoughts running through the "Bulldogs" mind tonight. He hasn't pitched in the majors in over two years. His three-year, $47 million deal with the Dodgers has been a complete embarrassment up to this point. Starting in only six games for the Dodgers, going 1-4 with a 6.31 ERA. No matter what may be on his mind, the Dodgers management will have their eyes and thoughts solely on Schmidt. His start tonight will heavily dictate what the Dodgers do next, as July 31 is right around the corner. Which means if the Dodgers are going to make a move they are running out of time. If Schmidt can prove to be successful, his presence in the back of this rotation could put this team over the top.
Can Schmidt really pull this comeback off? Is there anything left in that former Cy Young winning arm? What motivation and drive this guy must have. He hasn't given up once, he has continued to fight for over two years. No matter what happens tonight, Jason Schmidt has earned my utmost respect for being a fighter, and a true baseball player.

Dodgers Looking to Deal With The Reds?
Ken Gurnick from MLB.com had this update in his latest blog. The Dodgers remain heavily interested in Roy Halladay and George Sherrill. The Dodgers are one of the very few remaining teams still in on Halladay. Though it remains unlikely Halladay is traded, the Phillies and Dodgers remain the top two favorites to land him.
The Dodgers are now in negotiations with the Cincinnati Reds for one of their top relievers. Francisco Cordero is their top target, while Arthur Rhodes and David Weathers remain a possibility as well. I honestly didn't know Rhodes and Weathers were still pitching these days. If on the cheap, a veteran like Rhodes or Weathers couldn't hurt on a young pitching staff. Francisco Cordero or George Sherrill remain my two top picks, as I think they are perfect fits for Los Angeles. As the series opens up tonight with Cincinnati, the Dodgers will be looking very closely in the late innings.

Dodgers Pitching Feeling The Pain
Currently four of the Dodgers key bullpen contributors are recovering on the disabled list. Ronald Belisario one of the biggest surprises of the season, is suffering from a right elbow injury. He will likely not be back in action until mid or late August.
Will Ohman still has no timetable for his return, and after his major setback in June, it is becoming a reality that he won't pitch for the remainder of the season.
Hong-Chih Kuo is on track for a late July return. He injured his very brittle left arm again earlier in the season. The Dodgers are not counting on his return, however his return would bring a huge boost if he is able to contribute in the second half.
Then we have the workhorse setup man Cory Wade, as he was placed on the disabled list yesterday. He has a strained right shoulder, and though the injury appears to be minor, this is a major blow to the bullpen. Barring any setbacks he should be back around the middle of August.
Then the biggest blow of all is Broxton and his sore toe. The injury caused him to miss his first all star appearance. The injury will be something Broxton and the Dodgers will have to work through the rest of the season. Broxton will deal with the injury properly in the off-season.
Tough situation for the Dodgers, the heart of the bullpen is at home licking their wounds. Meanwhile still find themselves on top with the best record in baseball. But wait it gets worse as fifth starter Eric Milton is out for the season. The good news is the Dodgers have a potential in house replacement. Jason Schmidt is reportedly very close to returning to action with three recent successful outings on the mound. Schmidt's progress has been very positive and though skepticism is expected it is very possible to see him on a major league mound very soon.
With all of the injuries and skepticism behind Kuo and Schmidt the Dodgers are looking to make some key acquisitions. Any thoughts on free agents that may be worthwhile? Does a trade for Roy Halladay or Cliff Lee make sense? What would it take to get Halladay and Frasor from the Blue Jays? Time will tell and the next couple of weeks should be fun to follow.

Dodgers Rumors Update
The rumors are are flooding in on the possibility of Roy Halladay being traded in the next two weeks. Tom Verducci of SI.com had this update on the Dodgers acquiring the AL All-Star Halladay. Clayton Kershaw is off-limits. If this is true I find a deal getting done very unlikely. According to Verducci the Blue Jays seem to like third baseman Josh Bell. Apparently the Dodgers are going to make a run at Halladay with current prospect. This obviously makes sense as the Dodgers do not want to create any holes on the current 25 man roster.
According to Jon Heyman from SI.com the Dodgers are still looking for a reliever, and they are also looking to bolster the starting rotation with Cliff Lee or Roy Halladay. I just don't see Lee being traded with his very affordable contract. The Indians would have to be blown away to trade away last years Cy Young winner.
Ken Rosenthal from Fox Sports has some updates on the Dodgers current trade targets. He lists George Sherrill, John Frasor, and confirms what we already know by naming Roy Halladay again. All three guys are absolute perfect fits for the Dodgers. Three quality pitchers and absolute classy guys on and off the field. What would it take to get one of Sherrill or Frasor and Halladay?
The Dodgers added Belisario and Wade to the DL. Along with Eric Milton who is out for the season with his recent surgery. I would expect a deal for a reliever very soon if one is going to happen.

Eric Milton Out For Season
Ken Gurnick has an injury update on the Dodgers starter Eric Milton this afternoon. Milton was on the 15 day disabled list with a herniated disc, and he underwent surgery today and figures to miss the remainder of the season.
Milton has already been on the DL twice this season with back problems. He has a long history of being injury prone and unfortunately this season was no different. The 33-year old left-hander had been one of the pleasant surprises for the Dodgers, filling in as a fifth starter after missing the past two seasons recovering from Tommy John elbow reconstruction. He was sure to be on the list of another great Dodgers reclamation project, and possibly a comeback player of the year award. He was 2-1 with a 3.80 ERA in five starts.
The Dodgers have already made it known they are looking for pitching. The Dodgers have already inquired on Roy Hallady and others as the trade deadline approaches. With the Dodgers losing their fifth starter look for the rumors to pick up quickly. Eric Stults will likely get the call to replace Milton in the rotation.

Broxton Injured: Will Miss All Star Game
Jonathan Broxton was just recently voted to the National League All-Star Game. He was on the verge of making his first All-Star Game appearance. Then after his terrible outing on Sunday he finally confessed that his big toe was still bothering him. The same big toe that has been bothering him on and off all season. In what has been called an interrogation with Joe Torre, he informed Joe that it was really sore as he was pushing off the mound while he pitched. This discomfort is what has likely lead to a couple rough recent outings.
The Dodgers need Broxton at 100% or as close to it. Torre does not want to jeopardize Broxton's season by him playing in Wednesdays game. It has to be disappointing for Broxton as it is an honor to be voted into the mid-summer classic. However Broxton is no dummy and wants to make sure he is healthy for the second half as the Dodgers currently sit on top of the MLB. Broxton will take the opportunity he has to get some much needed rest for himself and his toe, and then prepare for the remainder of the season.
Broxton will be watched very closely over his next several games. Unfortunately this situation will only get better with a long period of rest. This will likely bother Broxton through the rest of the season, and it will be something he has to work through. Broxton is heading into the second half of the season as arguably the best closer in baseball. Broxton currently has 6 wins and holds a 3.10 ERA. He has a very impressive 20 saves and leads the majors as a closer with 65 strikeouts. Look for much of the same from Broxton as the Dodgers look to repeat as the NL West champions in 2009.

Roy Halladay to Dodgers Rumors Begin
The Dodgers are already in on Roy Halladay, the current ace pitcher for the Toronto Blue Jays. . Halladay is perhaps the best pitcher in all of baseball and as long as he remains in Toronto his chances a winning a World Series remain slim at best. Current Toronto GM J.P. Ricciardi is "listening" to offers for Halladay, and the rumors are swirling. Even with the large price tag it remains very possible that Halladay is traded before the July 31 trade deadline. The most likely destinations are Phillies, Rangers, Giants, Cardinals, Angels, and the Dodgers. The current asking price for Halladay straight from SI's Jon Heyman is substantial.
Now let's move on and talk Dodgers. Roy Halladay is at the absolute top of my list of pitchers I want in a Dodgers uniform. However there are numerous reasons I don't want Colletti to even pick up the phone and dial Ricciardi's phone number. Sure the idea of having Halladay and Billingsley in the same rotation sounds good. This would give the Dodgers the best one two in the league. The Dodgers remain the best team in baseball and when you have a winning team on the field you do not want to disrupt that winning chemistry. With the Dodgers having only two top prospects in Baseball America's Top 100 list, it could completely deplete what is left of our quality prospects. With that being what it is names like Kershaw, Ethier, Kemp will likely be discussed to even be considered trade partners. Top that off with $22MM owed on his current deal which expires at the end of the 2010 season. An extension will likely be required along with a full no trade clause. When all is said and done you have an ugly large pitching contract that the Dodgers have failed miserably one over the years. Remember Kevin Brown, Jason Schmidt, and Darren Dreifort? For these reasons and several others don't plan on buying a Roy Halladay Dodgers jersey anytime soon or probably ever. However I will say if the Giants or Angels get serious on Halladay it may change this scenario rapidly.

The Return Of Manny Ramirez
Ladies and gentlemen the return of Manny Ramirez has finally arrived. The Dodgers are set to square off against the Padres tonight, and you gotta figure the Friars are going to let Manny have it. It should be fairly similar to the antics Dodger fans gave Barry Bonds when he was patrolling left field. Manny appears to be fully healed from his minor hamstring injury from earlier in the season and looks to be in great baseball shape.
Ramirez has got to be anxiously awaiting his return to Dodger Stadium on July 16th when the Dodgers host the visiting Houston Astros. The return of Manny is interesting to me as I am wondering what the fans response will be. There will probably be a fair share of boos heard throughout the stadium. I think most of the fans could care less about the PED allegations, strictly because his record speaks for itself.
The Dodgers are the still the best team in baseball and have been since May 3rd. The chemistry on this team is just an unbelievable sight. How will Manny's rejoining the team affect the team, will his arrival become a distraction and cause the team to lose focus? Or will Manny Mania run rampant just like in July of 2008 when the Dodgers traded for the prolific slugger.
Juan Pierre who has been red hot in the last 60 days and has filled in perfectly for the Dodgers, will now find himself on the bench with Manny immediately taking over his starting spot on the team. Pierre who has showcased himself quite nicely will probably continue to hope for a trade, however the Dodgers don't seem to be in any real hurry to deal their super 4th man.
In order to active Manny Ramirez from his suspension the Dodgers needed to clear a spot on the 40 man roster. While Manny was suspended he was inactive and did not count against the 40 man roster which has led us to the following moves made by the Dodgers. Eric Stults was activated from the disabled list and then immediately sent back to AAA and will start regularly. A.J. Ellis will also accompany Stults has they head back to Albuquerque. Long time minor league player Mitch Jones was designated for assignment despite hitting .308 during his first ever major league stint. Jones enters a 10-day window during which he can be claimed by another club, traded or released. This move was the necessary move the Dodgers had to make to make room for Manny.
More moves than just activating Ramirez must be made Friday. The Minor League rehab assignment for pitcher Claudio Vargas and his sprained right elbow is up, and he is expected to be activated to replace Ellis on the 25-man active roster. A 40-man spot would be needed for him, possibly by moving reliever Hong-Chih Kuo from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day DL. If the Dodgers fail to activate Vargas he can declare free agency. Don't expect that to happen as Torre and company will want to see if he can help on the Major League level before making a decision.
