Dodgers Acquire Jim Thome

SI's Jon Heyman is reporting that the Dodgers have just acquired Jim Thome. I didn't see this one coming at all, and Colletti has once again pulled off a great trade. The Dodgers give up Justin Fuller in the deal and are expected to receive some cash in the deal from the Sox. The Dodgers have been in the hunt for left-handed power off the bench, and Thome definitely fits that description as he is currently 12th on the all time home run list. Thome has 23 home runs and 74 RBI's as a member of the White Sox this season.

Dodgers Possible August Trade Targets

Update 8/31: Colletti completed three deals in the last 48 hours completing trades to acquire Ronnie Belliard, Jim Thome, and Jon Garland. Ned got it done at the deadline and pulled out three solid moves.

Update 8/27: There are some recent additions to the players list below, check out the latest on LaTroy Hawkins, Trevor Hoffman, and Chad Qualls.

Update 8/26 9:02pm:
Not a whole lot going on as the month of August is coming to a close. The Colorado Rockies took Russ Ortiz and Jason Giambi off the market by signing both of them for the remainder of the season. Missing out on Ortiz is not a big surprise as the Dodgers are no longer in the market for a starting pitcher. With the recent signing of Vicente Padilla, and the impact that Eric Stults and Charlie Haeger have had on the season, Torre and company are not looking to make any other additions. Ben Maller tweeted that the Dodgers have had there eyes on two or three players that have cleared waivers.

Update 8/20 7:10am: Jon Garland has cleared waivers according to Jon Paul Morosi at Foxsports. Garland is probably the best thing on the open pitching market currently, but his $4MM left on his current contract could shy GM's away. Garland is 6-11 but plays for one of the worst teams in the league, and he has managed to hold a 4.42 ERA in 25 starts this year. He does have some appeal because of his postseason experience with the White Sox in 2005. He is also averaging over 6 innings pitched per game, so that could draw some appeal to a team like the Dodgers.

Update 8/19 1:36pm:
John Smoltz is off the market as he has officially signed with the St. Louis Cardinals for about 100K. Vicente Padilla is close to an agreement with the Los Angeles Dodgers. With these two guys off the market there is little to no starting pitcher options on the market. The Dodgers may still not be done as they have kept tabs on the relief market for weeks. Justin Speier would be a good fit for the Dodgers after his release from the Angels of Anaheim.

Update 8/18 1:22pm:
Despite Joe Torre recently saying "he doesn't think a player with Padilla's reputation would cause problems in the Dodgers' clubhouse." Dylan Hernandez of the L.A. Times says that the Dodgers are not likely to pursue recently released Vicente Padilla. Paul Kinzer contacted the Dodgers to let them know his client Padilla would "absolutely" like to pitch in Dodger Blue. If Padilla signs, his new team will only be responsible for the pro-rated portion of the MLB minimum salary. Not a whole lot of risk here, and it's not like we don't need pitching help. There aren't a lot of better options out there since it appears Arroyo and Harang aren't going anywhere.

Update 8/17 12:39pm:
Ken Rosenthal says you can add Russ Ortiz as a player being considered by the Dodgers after his release by the Yankees. Ortiz had three decent starts in the Yankees AAA affiliate.

Update 8/17 12:26pm: John Smoltz has been released by the Boston Red Sox and is now free to sign with any team. The Dodgers have expressed formal interest to the right-hander and Smoltz is likely to make a decision before August 31. Smoltz had an 8.33 ERA and a 1.70 WHIP in eight terrible starts with the Red Sox. Smoltz had signed a one year contract worth $5.5MM, leaving the Red Sox on the hook for the remainder of that deal.

Update 8/12 8:30pm:
As the Dodgers rumors have fallen very silent lately, I did find an update that Hal McCoy of the Dayton Daily News says that Bronson Arroyo and Aaron Harang will not be traded. I find this a little hard to believe since the Reds have no shot of contending anytime soon and need to shed payroll.

Update 8/12 7:46pm: Doug Davis has been claimed off waivers by the Milwaukee Brewers according to Jon Heyman. The Brewers think they actually have a shot at contending this year?

Update 8/10 2:07pm:
Jon Paul Morosi from Fox Sports has an update on Reds pitchers for us today. Not a big surprise but Bronson Arroyo and Aaron Harang both cleared waivers today and can be traded to any team. Arroyo is at $9.5MM this season and Harang is making $11MM this year. It's speculated the Reds will have to take on salary in any deal. Purely speculation here what if you have Harange in a pitchers park with good defense behind him? Pierre for Harang could be an interesting deal. Reds need help in the outfield, and everyone knows the Dodgers need help in the rotation.

Update 8/9 8:11pm:
Despite my better judgment I added Danys Baez from the Orioles and John Smoltz to the list. I seriously doubt the Dodgers interest in either player. However with the amount of players falling quickly off the list, they could remain longshot candidates.

Update 8/9/ 5:23pm: David Weathers has been claimed off waivers and traded to the Milwaukee Brewers. The list is dwindling pretty rapidly, Colletti better get busy.

Update 8/7 10:09am:
Rotoworld says Carl Pavano has been traded to the Twins for a PTBNL.

Update 9:28pm: Paul Byrd has signed with the Boston Red Sox, so he can be scratched.

Update 8/5 6:05pm: I will be updating this post as any new players or information comes across. You can the updates below regarding Erik Bedard likely being done for the season, and eliminates any possible trade from happening.

The July 31 trade deadline has come and gone. George Sherrill and Vinny Rottino were added, and Claudio Vargas, Josh Bell, and Steve Johnson were subtracted. A lot of Dodgers rumors talk, however very little action when the dust settled yesterday afternoon. However the Dodgers may not be done yet, as they have until August 31st to complete any trades. That's right the real trade deadline is August 31. There is one slight little catch because players must pass through waivers before they can be traded.

The following players are mostly speculation, with a mixture of knowledge and gut instinct. The Dodgers are focused on pitchers, and I don't really see that changing in the next 30 days. Last year Greg Maddux was an August addition, and we could see a similar acquisition this year. Paul Byrd, Odalis Perez, Ben Sheets, and Mark Mulder are still free agents. I am not sure if any of those players are currently an upgrade over fifth starter Jason Schmidt.

Starting Pitchers
Bronson Arroyo-Cleared waivers today and can be traded to any team.
Aaron Harang-Cleared waivers and can now be traded to any team.
Jon Garland- Cleared waivers on 8/20 and can be traded to any team with no restrictions.
Doug Davis- Was claimed off waivers by the Brewers but no deal was reached.
Carl Pavano- Traded to the Twins on 8/7/2009
Erik Bedard-Rehab assignment has been shut down and is likely done for the season.
John Smoltz- The Cardinals reached an agreement with the 42 year old this morning.
Vicente Padilla- The Dodgers signed Padilla and will make his first start on 8/27.

Relief Pitchers
Trevor Hoffman- Recently put on waivers by the Brewers, he is has a very high chance of being moved.
LaTroy Hawkins- Put on waivers and was immediately claimed by another team, and the Astros pulled him back and now can not be traded until after the season is over.
David Weathers- Acquired by the Brewers for a PTBNL.
Chad Qualls- Recently put on waivers by Arizona, he is not expected to be traded. He would bring in a nice haul however.
Heath Bell- Remains a long shot due to waivers, and the Dodgers having the best record in the majors.
Danys Baez- Recently cleared waivers, not a great fit in Los Angeles.
Justin Speier- Recently released by the Angels of Anaheim.

As far as the starters go, I am not sure if Arroyo, Harang, would clear waivers. This becomes obstacle one for those players. Davis, Garland, and Pavano are the more attainable trade targets.

In the relief market it is quite possible any one of those four players could be traded and clear waivers. Weathers and Frasor remain the most probable trade candidates. Rhodes seems to not fit anymore with the recent acquisition of Sherrill. Capps and Duke are probably the best of the group, and remain a long shot for the Dodgers.

Around The Bases

The Dodgers bounced back nicely today with a solid performance by beating the Rockies 6-1 today. The win puts the NL West lead back to three games as the Dodgers look to make it four games by winning the game and series tomorrow. Vicente Padilla will be making his Dodgers debut against Jorge De La Rosa. Padilla needs to put on a solid six inning start and keep the momentum going.

Great news on George Sherrill today as the MRI came back negative on his oblique and he is listed as day to day. Those wondering why he wasn't in the game Tuesday when James McDonald blew the game for us, well now you now.

MLBTR has a brief article stating that Manny shouted "I'm going to be here next year" to his Dodgers teammates. Not a huge shocker as who in the world would pay this guy $20MM to play baseball next year. You can also check out an interesting discussion about Orlando Hudson at MLBTR here.

Have The Dodgers Lost Their Mojo?

Was it all a dream? I know I watched a young ball-club come together and blast through the first half of the season. First they broke the new record with the home wins streak. We watched Matt Kemp find his groove and become the dangerous five tool player. Then the shocking news of Manny Ramirez being suspended for 50 games came, and nobody expected what happened next. The Dodgers pulled together and built an amazing chemistry, and though players like Furcal and Martin have struggled throughout the season. The Dodgers found life behind the bats of Casey Blake and Orlando Hudson. Those two guys carried the weight of the team and helped ease the pain of losing Manny for half the season. Juan Pierre filled in perfectly at left field and put on a first half MVP award like show. Pierre got it done with Manny being absent and it's as simple as that. The rest of the young crew Ethier, Kemp, and Loney found ways to generate offense and provide excellent defense to help lead this team to hold the best record in baseball for several months.

The pitching was and still is very questionable at times with Kuroda off and on the disabled list, and the incredibly inexperienced but talented bullpen. We have Broxton no doubt when he is on his game he is the best closer in baseball. However between his bum toe and his lack of consistency has blown five saves this season. You can bet eyebrows are being raised as those five games would make our lead look much more comfy. Then you have these once in a lifetime pitchers like Billingsley and Kershaw who have all of the talent in the world yet can't find a way to be consistent. Billingsley had a great Cy Young candidate like first half, however he struggled quite a bit through the month of July. He was recently on the disabled list for a strained hamstring and is hopefully on track after his amazing performance Monday against Chris Carpenter. Kershaw, I just can't figure this guy out. At times he looks like the best pitcher in all of baseball and then he looks like he did last night throwing 4 innings of mediocre at best baseball. Both Billingsley and Kershaw are very young and may be struggling by adding pressure to themselves as they seem to be pressing at times, and it's obvious their mental toughness is just not there yet.

There is no doubt this club is struggling and it seems that Dr. Evil has stolen their mojo. The Dodgers have gone from the best team in baseball to a team desperately trying to hold on to first place. The bullpen is exhausted since the starting rotation has a rough time going more than five innings except on the rare occasion. The offense seems to be hanging in there and the team as a whole seems to be going through a major slump. I will say if there was a good time for a major slump now would be it. There is still plenty of Dodgers baseball to be played and plenty of time for the Dodgers to get back in the groove and get their mojo back. It wasn't by luck or chance that this team was the best team in baseball. They have the tools, the coaching, and the chemistry to win it all. The Dodgers need to regroup and regain focus and know that it's times like these that make you stronger and become a better baseball team. The time is now there is no time to waste. Let's go Dodgers and remember THINK BLUE.

Official: LA Dodgers Sign Vicente Padilla

Update 5:09pm: It's a done deal Padilla has signed a minor league deal with the Dodgers. The Dodgers signed him for slightly less than $100K, and he will make at least one start in the minors before being assigned to the major league roster. Padilla has not pitched in over two weeks, so the minors assignment is necessary for him to get back in the groove. There is also a roster space issue, and this could spell a trip to the disabled list for Kuroda. This is a great signing by Ned Colletti, as we get a decent pitcher that can burn some innings and the only risk is small amount of cash. Padilla should make a nice contribution to this team, and the change of scenery will be and added bonus for him. Hopefully a rejuvenated Padilla can slide into the fifth rotation spot successfully. I mentioned before that Padilla's stats were somewhat inflated and I wanted to take a moment and clarify. Take a look at Padilla's road stats in 8 games 51 innings pitched. Padilla has posted the following stats, 3.88 ERA, with a 1.25 WHIP, and he has given up 23 walks with only 25 strikeouts. However the best stat of all is that hitters are hitting just .227 against him. The Rangers Arlington Park is definitely a tough park to pitch in, so the road numbers should provide a little bit of more relative stats to base your opinions on. The move to Dodger Stadium, on a winning team, plus the change of scenery with a coach like Joe Torre on your side should rejuvenate Padilla. He will provide some much needed depth, and if he can pitch anywhere near his road stats this move will be another solid signing by Ned Colletti.

Update 2:21pm: The Dodgers are now "very" close to a deal with Padilla. His agent Paul Kinzer has been trying to get his client in Dodger Blue for about a week now. Looks like Kinzer will get his wish as Padilla will likely be a Dodger by the end of the evening.

The Dodgers are reportedly close to an agreement with Vicente Padilla according to Jon Paul Morosi at Foxsports.com. With no official word yet let's recap and dive into the Padilla facts we know so far.

Padilla was labeled as a huge distraction for the Rangers, and was also said to be a terrible clubhouse teammate.

Joe Torre had been recently quoted to saying "he doesn't think a player with Padilla's reputation would cause problems in the Dodgers' clubhouse." Torre managed a Yankee team with it's definite share of personality problems and egos. He also managed to turn Manny Ramirez around seemingly overnight from his nasty divorce with the Red Sox management.

There has been almost no interest so far in Padilla's services even with the high demand for pitching. There are not any better pitching options available to my knowledge. Arroyo and Harang could be argued as slightly better, however you have to factor in the millions of dollars they cost compared to the 100K that Padilla would cost.

You can see a recent post on why Padilla is a good fit for the Dodgers here.

Dodgers Rumors: Smoltz and Padilla Updates

Update 8/19 9:50am: Vicente Padilla is close to being signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers according to Jon Paul Morosi. Not a big surprise as I have thought he was a perfect fit all along. The Dodgers are reportedly close to an agreement no official word yet.

Update 8/19 9:32am:
John Smoltz has officially cleared waivers and has signed with the St. Louis Cardinals. He will be assigned as the fifth starter in the rotation at least for now.

Update 6:31pm: Jayson Stark via Twitter says Smoltz is close to signing with the Cardinals, and wants to make a decision tomorrow. Stark also later says that the Dodgers were recently interested in signing Smoltz. We could see a late push by the Dodgers with the Cardinals being close to an agreement.

Update 4:30pm:
Jon Paul Morosi has a conflicting report against the earlier L.A. Times report. He says the Dodgers are among the teams still looking at Padilla. Here are the highlights from the post "The Dodgers have some interest in Vicente Padilla, one major-league source said Wednesday, although one Dodgers official downplayed the chances that the team will sign the right-hander. Padilla is expected to clear waivers on Wednesday afternoon and could sign with a new team soon afterward, one source said. He was placed on waivers by Texas on Monday."

The Dodgers are still in full court press mode as they continue to look for pitching help down the stretch. Colletti is apparently looking at several different options that are available externally. He is known to have on inquired on Bronson Arroyo and Aaron Harang of the Reds with no luck so far.

Colletti has made formal interest in John Smoltz, but a report this morning says he has "major concerns about his throwing shoulder." The Cardinals have made the most effort so far in obtaining Smoltz's services. I would say the Dodgers have crossed Smoltz off their list, and look for Smoltz to sign with St. Louis by the end of the week. Smoltz is a free agent now that he has been formally released by the Boston Red Sox.

The other possible target is Vicente Padilla, and this looks like it is a dead issue as well after the recent L.A. Times report. I don't agree with the report as this seems like the best fit for both Padilla and the Dodgers. Once you factor in the risk only being a pro-rated league minimum salary I think this is win-win situation.

Dodgers Baseball Weekend Recap

Got some Around the Bases for you Dodger fans that missed the action over the weekend.

A very scary incident during Saturdays game with the D'backs starting pitcher Hiroki Kuroda was hit in the head by a line drive off the bat of Rusty Ryal. Kuroda was taken off the field on a stretcher. In case you missed this live and would like to see the video, click here. The good news Kuroda is doing fine after spending the night in the hospital. He is listed as day to day and should not see any time on the disabled list. You can read a recent interview with him about the incident here.

Torre is quoted as saying he is "still confident" in Jonathon Broxton as his closer. Broxton has been struggling as of late and blew another save Saturday night.

Chad Billingsley has been cleared of his hamstring cramp and will pitch Tuesday against St. Louis.

The Dodgers took 1 out of 2 against the D'backs thanks to Randy Wolf and his excellent performance yesterday. Wolf fell a triple short of hitting for the cycle and had a marvelous day on the mound. The Dodgers may have ended their slumping ways yesterday with the 9-3 win. They have three games with the Cardinals and then four with the Cubs before heading to Colorado. Three very critical match-ups coming up for the Dodgers, so they had better get it together. The Dodgers have won six of the last fifteen games and need to turn things around rather quickly to regain their momentum heading into the final weeks of the season.

Dodgers Talk: Jason Giambi The September Answer?

Am I the only person that sees it? Jason Giambi is the absolute answer for the Dodgers bench. We have no power whatsoever off the bench. We need a guy that has homerun threat every time he steps up to the plate. That threat is nowhere to be found on the Dodgers bench currently. I haven't seen much talk all season about the missing power factor and I think it's time for it to be addressed. Our bench looks pretty good don't get me wrong, but we need that clutch homerun power presence we are so obviously missing. I think this will become more of an issue as we reach September and be much easier to add a guy like Giambi when the rosters expand.

Let me break this down a little further. Who would you rather have at the plate with runners in scoring position, down one run with runners in scoring position, Jason Giambi or Juan Castro? Exactly, it's a no brainer and that is my point. We need a hitter that makes the pitcher think a little harder than usual before he lays one in there. Giambi would add be a veteran bat with a long history of playoff experience. Oakland is on the hook for his salary this season either way so there is no risk. It' s quite obvious that Giambi is nearing the end and just doesn't have much to offer anymore as an everyday player. I also understand hitting .193 is nothing to brag about, but he has some power from the left side which is exactly what the Dodgers need. I say Ned gives Giambi a shot off the bench and hey what have we got to lose if it doesn't work out we can always release him again right?

Dodgers Talk: Vicente Padilla

The Dodgers have been linked to Vicente Padilla according to Kevin Baxter of the LA Times. While this isn't much of a surprise to anyone because the Dodgers should be linked to any available pitcher on the market right now. There is no doubt the Dodgers need pitching. Here is the question, is Vicente Padilla the answer? That's what this section of Dodgers Talk is all about. We will look at the facts and then open up the comment section for all of you Dodgers fans to hand out your opinions.

Here is what we know so far. Joe Torre was quoted recently saying "If we're going to need a starter, we'll get a starter," So that means the Dodgers will get a starter because we all know they need one but thanks Joe for clearing that up.

Vicente Padilla cleared waivers in June with no takers. He was then designated for assignment on August 7th. The only teams so far to be even mentioned as interested are the Dodgers and Brewers. Earlier today Brewers GM Doug Melvin said he has no interest in John Smoltz, Mark Mulder or Padilla. Padilla is 31, and has allowed 120 hits and 42 walks in 108 innings, striking out 59 for an ERA just under 5.00. No official word if Padilla has cleared waivers in August but there is no reason to believe he won't.

The common consensus is that Padilla and the Dodgers are a good fit. There is no doubt a change of scenery to a winning team, in a pitcher friendly ballpark would do him some good. Torre is a great coach and can bring this guy around and correct any clubhouse issues.

The bottom line is this, a move to Chavez Ravine and the National League will give Padilla a boost. This will help out his very misleading ERA as his stats are in my opinion somewhat inflated. The Dodgers need a pitcher that can pitch 7 consistent innings, while keeping the walks to a minimum and limit offenses to 3 or 4 runs. I think Padilla can be our guy and the best thing is the risk is very minimal if we wait until he clears waivers. The Rangers are putting a lot of energy into ridding themselves of Padilla currently, and he has become a cancer on and off the field for the Texas ballclub.

Dodgers Are Looking Outside For Pitching Help

Kevin Baxter of the LA Times has Dodgers manager Joe Torre saying the Dodgers can add pitching, and that they are actively looking outside the organization. Well I say there is too much looking and talking going on. With the Dodgers possible August waiver targets list changing daily one would think a move will come sooner rather than later.

The positive are when Chad Billingsley and Clayton Kershaw are on their game they both look like staff aces. However they are not able to do this consistently, and because they are very young their lack of mental toughness shows at times. If they can find a way to be consistent for the remainder of the season the Dodgers will be in great shape. The problem is they have been unable to do this and leaving Dodgers management is a position where a move has to be made. Kuroda and Wolf I have little concern over as they are veterans and may not be the best pitchers in baseball, but they hand out six quality innings every start. Jason Schmidt is likely done for the season and his career is likely over as well. Eric Stults, Scot Elbert, James McDonald are simply too inexperienced to match up against playoff pitching. This leaves some huge question marks at the middle to back end of the rotation. The fifth spot in the rotation is in shambles currently and missing out of Cliff Lee and Roy Halladay is looking like a huge mistake.

There are some good available options on the pitching market. Several players that could help a young Dodgers team that is desperate for some long quality innings. However it seems all of these players are question marks themselves and no move is a guaranteed fix.

John Smoltz-He has had a rough year in Boston so far. A change of scenery back to the National League may do him some good. He would fit in exactly how Greg Maddux has done the last couple of years. He is definitely an upgrade over anything we have for the fifth rotation spot. He was recently designated for assignment by the Red Sox and will likely be released if not traded soon.

Vincente Padilla- This is a risk no doubt about it. Ned Colletti's recent history of risky signings doesn't look to good, and this is why the debate as to whether or not Padilla is a good fit for the Dodgers. Before being released Padilla had a 8-6 record, with an ERA of 4.92. He can pitch seven innings every outing and a move to the pitcher friendly Chavez Ravine could give him a boost.

Then you have Bronson Arroyo, Aaron Harang, Jon Garland, and Doug Davis. I personally think we should add either Smoltz or Padilla and then go after one of the above four. I am not very big on Garland as he has never been that impressive to me. Any thoughts? I will start up separate discussion articles if I get any official links with a source.

Ned Colletti Better Get Busy

Alright wait just a minute what the heck just happened? Broxton blows another save (still love the guy, but man I was fuming Friday night) and basically our whole pitching staff has collapsed. We win one game from the Braves solely by Ethier's heroic save. If not for that magical win we would be on a four game losing streak. We have lost 6 out of the last 10, currently on a three game losing streak. Wait it gets worse, we are no longer the best team in baseball and only up 5.5 games on Colorado and San Francisco. This had better be a slump and not a late season collapse. Our pitching has been very questionable lately and Colletti had better get busy.

There is no doubt that the Dodgers need a starting pitcher added to their rotation if they want any shot of winning it all this year. The Dodgers will win the NL West this year no matter what. But that isn't enough anymore because that was an expectation going into this season. It is almost a certainty that we will have a rematch with the Phillies in the NLCS. This time however the outcome needs to be much different. The bar has been set high for this ballclub and it's management this year, and a season without a trip to the World Series would be considered a huge disappointment.

Ned Colletti needs to pick up the phone and pull out at least one deal for a starting pitcher. The need for additional bullpen help remains to be seen. However blown saves by Broxton and late game collapses are not helping the bullpens case. With the list of available players dwindling rapidly it's time for Colletti to take action. The Dodgers need a starter that has a veteran leadership presence that can also eat innings. It's times like these that make you miss a guy like Derek Lowe. I strongly feel a guy like Aaron Harang or Bronso Arroyo could help this team out immensely. Colletti is going to be kicking himself for not acquiring Cliff Lee, and it could cost him his job this off-season. Colletti needs to get his act together and pull out some moves to save this ballclub, the season, and his job.

Dodgers Injury Report

Dodgers pitcher Jason Schmidt has been placed on the disabled list once again. This time it may be for good as it appears he doesn't have anything left. It seems injuries have just gotten the best of Jason, and it may be time for him to go out and save what little pride he has left. The flip side of this could be simply a roster move for a very crowded roster. This will enable the Dodgers to give him some rest and have him ready for the September roster call-ups.

No news on Will Ohman and probably will not hear anything for a couple more weeks. If he can get healthy in time, he may be eligible for a spot on the roster in September when the rosters expand. His return this season still remains very doubtful.

Billingsley remains questionable for his next start on Wednesday. Torre will not rush him back and risk further injury. His hamstring remains tight and is still somewhat limited and the official word will come for Joe Torre tomorrow sometime. I would expect for Chad to sit out his next start as the Dodgers will want to play this one on the safe side.

Around The Bases

Some random LA Dodgers chatter to fill your Friday afternoon.

Guillermo Mota took his fine like a man, and does not plan on appealing. He will not receive a suspension from the drama with Prince Fielder in Tuesday nights blowout against the Brewers.

Jason Schmidt is in danger of being shut down again, and this time it may be for good. Eric Stults is rumored to be heading to Los Angeles by Monday. My take is Schmidt doesn't have anything left in the tank, and has been ineffective and gotten lucky with a solid Dodgers defense behind him. The potential Stults and Schmidt exchange speaks for itself and doesn't require any explanation.

Ronald Belisario, Tony Abreu, and Doug Mientkiewicz are all do back within a couple of weeks. This means some roster moves are going to have to be made. The Dodgers roster is beginning to get very crowded, and could possibly lead to an August trade. Both Abreu and Belisario are to be called back up to the bigs within the next several days along with Stults. Schmidt is still scheduled to make his next start in San Francisco on Monday as of today.

Jeff Weaver could also be part of a cut to make room for someone who is much more effective. The likely replacement being Belisario or Wade who are both in the minors on rehab assignments. Juan Castro is likely to go away if and when Tony Abreu arrives. Of course this all talk could be undone with a trade by the Dodgers GM Ned Colletti. However there is absolute silence in the Dodgers rumors department.

Ethier Continues To Bring The Magic

Andre Ethier has done it again, he came up with a giant clutch walk-off homer to win the game last night 5-4. The game appeared all but over after two failed attempts by the Dodgers offense to pull ahead in the seventh and eighth innings. During both attempts to pull ahead, the Dodgers had two runners on base and the offense failed to produce. Then in the bottom of the ninth, "Mr. Magic" stepped up to the plate with runners at the corners, score 4-2 Braves.

My long time buddy took me to the game last night so I had the privilege of seeing this game live. I had talked to him during the game about the recent Dodgers heroics, especially in regards to Ethier's clutch home run performance this season. I told him in the middle of the ninth inning, "Soriano is either hot and lights out, or cold and blows saves." Tonight was definitely a cold night for Rafael Soriano. The crowd is electric with Ethier at the plate, and he gets two straight balls out of the zone from Soriano. I look over to my buddy and tell him "2-0 count fastball coming, and Ethier is going to hit a walk-off homer right over that right field wall." Next pitch is exactly that, a 96 mph fastball and Ethier gladly takes it yard over the right field wall. Another magical finish for this amazing Dodgers ball club. The crowd erupts immediately and moments later Ethier is getting pummelled by the entire ball club at home plate. One of the best Dodgers memories ever for me personally, and nothing like witnessing something like that live. To relive yesterdsays magical finish you can see it right here.

Ethier continues to lead the Dodgers with 23 home runs on the season. He also is leading the club with 72 RBI's, an AVG of .274, and a .516 on base percentage. Ethier now has five walk-off hits this season to lead the Majors. Three of the five have been hit yard. Andre is showcasing his talents and has been a stable run producer for the Dodgers this season. He has come up with five extra wins and is the absolute definition of clutch this season. His magical heroics will begin to strike fear into opposing pitchers when the game is on the line.

Ned Colletti Debunks Deadline Blockbuster

Diamond Leung has some comments from a recent XM radio interview with Dodgers GM Ned Colletti and show host Larry Kruger. Here are some of the highlights from the conversation. When Colletti was asked if he was ever close to trading James Loney at this years trade deadline, this was his response

“No, we were never close to doing something like that. What aggravates me is that people, with the way the media works today or blogs work today or whatever, people can say whatever they want with no credence, no history, no reason to do it, just except to start something up and to act like they know what they’re talking about. "

Jon Heyman was the first to report the blockbuster on Twitter. This may be a direct shot at him I am not sure and not going to read too much into these comments. It is reported that the Dodgers backed out at the last minute in the rumored deal with San Diego for Heath Bell and Adrian Gonzalez. Here is my take on this whole deal that never happened. First of all it doesn't matter who backed out first. This deal made zero sense for either team and never ever would have gone down. There is no way even a half way decent GM breaks up the core of his team while they have the best record in baseball. Despite Russell Martins rough start to the year he is still an elite catcher in the MLB. His defense may be the best in baseball, and he is finally getting in the groove at the plate this season. The big issue is there is no ready replacement if Martin were to be traded. The reality is this thing had no chance under any circumstances of getting close, and so now we can go back to focusing on the final stretch of the season.

Dodgers Injury Report

Chad Billingsley left the game Sunday night with what ends up being a leg cramp. He pitched a very solid five innings, and is hopefully out of his recent funk. He is listed as day to day, and is expected to make his next start. Billingsley is dead set on showing he can be the Dodgers true ace that everyone has been longing for. I think he already is and sometimes his youth still gets the better of him. It's nights like last night that show with Billingsley in this rotation we don't need a Roy Halladay.

In other injury news, Casey Blake has injured his left wrist after lifting weights after Saturday's loss to Atlanta. He had x-rays on Sunday and while the results were negative he could miss several days. He is listed as day to day and a trip on the dl is unlikely. Mark Loretta is scheduled to fill in while Blake is out of action.

Some good injury news, Belisario is expected to begin his rehab assignment tomorrow, and should be back by this weekend. Cory Wade is off the disabled list, and will see some playing time in AAA. Both players will be key contributors in the final stretch, and we may not see them until the September call-ups.
