Things are starting to look interesting in Los Angeles. The Dodgers have put together some intriguing plans over the past week that will leave the rest of the league reeling. Of these recent happenings, the most interesting are the fact that Mark McGwire may become the team’s new hitting coach and that the team is eyeing James Shields as their top choice for starting pitcher at the beginning of the season.
Getting McGwire as the team’s hitting coach for the season could be a huge move in the right direction for their offense. He is world renowned for his hitting, regardless of the controversy created by the steroid scandal, and will certainly make the Dodgers better in the long run. He has been the hitting coach for the St. Louis Cardinals over the oats three years and turned them around to the point where they are the best hitting team in the league. He will certainly provide some great experience to the squad.
In terms of Shields, he has been named as the Dodgers top trade target going into the offseason. With the Tampa Bay Devil Rays reluctant to pay the 21 million dollar contract Shields is guaranteed over the course of the next two years, he could very well be on his way to Los Angeles sometime soon. This will be a huge pick up for a Dodgers team that is stacked with money going into this season and looking to build the best team possible so they can make a run towards the World Series.
With these two situations in the fire for Los Angeles going into the offseason, the Dodgers are looking to be one of the great MLB picks for next year. Only time will tell, however, whether they are able to pull off these extremely interesting team acquisitions.
